Today we have a patient who had one of his coronary arteries treated previously with rotablation (a drill-like device in his coronary artery) due to a severely calcified artery. During that time, we found out he also had another lesion on his right side which was also severely diseased and calcified. He was brought in today for a procedure on his right side. Instead of using the same rotablation technique, we decided to use a new technology for treating calcified vessels with Intravascular Lithotripsy (IVL) called SoniCracker from Biosensors.
The SoniCracker™ is a new coronary intravascular lithotripsy balloon device that uses acoustic pressure waves to fracture calcified lesions, designed by Biosensors. It is known for its ability to treat complex, severely calcified lesions using a double-layer balloon design for increased safety and effectiveness, similar to other IVL methods but with specific advantages.
The new device successfully cracked the calcium, allowing us to implant the stent without much difficulty. The procedure took around 1 hour, and the patient made good progress. Technology advancement in the field of cardiology is moving fast, and it is our duty to keep on updating ourselves for our patients’ benefit.
